Discover the Pasquale Paoli Museum in Morosaglia

The Pasquale Paoli Museum, opened in 1954, is located in Morosaglia, a small village in the Castagniccia region of Northern Corsica. Housed in the birthplace of Pasquale Paoli, the museum is a site of great cultural and historical significance. It offers visitors a deep dive into the life and legacy of this iconic figure of Corsican history, providing valuable insight into his pivotal role in the island’s fight for independence and the preservation of its cultural identity.
The visit unfolds within the walls of Pasquale Paoli’s former family home, where each room displays significant historical objects: weapons (rifles, revolvers), portraits, furniture (bed, bathtub), and documents (constitution, baptismal certificate) that once belonged to him. We can also witness coins, the “soldi”, which were made during Corsica’s independent period. These items are presented both in traditional exhibits and through digital media, allowing access to archives not physically displayed, such as the Corsican Constitution of 1755. Unfortunately, the digital tools are only provided in French at the time we write this article.

By getting outside and taking another entrance, visitors can also explore the chapel that houses the remains of Pasquale Paoli, repatriated from London in the 19th century. Every year, this event is celebrated in Morosaglia during the «Fochi Paoli», which we talked about in a previous article. This chapel also contains various liturgical objects recovered from the village’s former church, including a chalice, flower crowns, and a remarkable triptych.
The celebration of the 300th anniversary of Pasquale Paoli’s birth is a perfect opportunity to visit this museum. It will host several temporary exhibitions for the occasion throughout the year. The museum impresses with the richness of its collections, the quality of its organisation, and the warm welcome extended to visitors. Thanks to the digital tools provided, the exploration of historical documents is enhanced, all while preserving the authentic charm of this traditional building. While remaining true to its architectural heritage, the museum has successfully embraced modernity, attracting an ever-growing audience each year.
