Ruins of Santa Maria di Riscamone in Valle di Rostino

Santa Maria di Riscamone

Located in Valle-di-Rostino, in North Corsica, the church of Santa Maria di Riscamone, now in ruins, stands as a remarkable testament to the region’s historical heritage. This ancient site has sparked renewed interest, leading to archaeological excavation initiatives as well as a restoration project aimed at preserving its cultural and historical value.

The church of Santa Maria di Riscamone is a major archaeological site in Corsica, reflecting multiple historical layers. The remains reveal a Paleo-Christian sanctuary built in the 5th century, a Romanesque church from the 12th century, and an octagonal baptistery. Among the major discoveries are polychrome mosaics and structures dating back to the 3rd century. In earlier times, this site held a central role in local religious life as the main church of the “pieve of Rostino.” Although it is now in ruins, restoration work is underway to preserve its architectural elements, reinforce existing structures, and provide safe access for visitors.

The site is located near the main hamlet of the village of Valle-di-Rostino. It is accessible via a short walking path that crosses a dry, natural landscape typical of the valleys in central Corsica. Parking spaces are available at the trailhead; from there, a ten-minute walk is enough to reach the church. Along the way, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding area, particularly the peak of the mountain “A Pena Rossa,” which overlooks the village of Popolasca.
